These are the words of a keen dolphin spotter who saw dolphins in the heart of Melbourne this week. Another sighter said it “was a beautiful sight of one or maybe two dolphins swimming downstream in the Yarra.” And well done to Ebony Dwipayana for getting the above photo.

We think that the dolphins might have been following bream migrating at this time of the year. “It is important for the public to respect our dolphins and obey the dolphin watching regulations”, said Sue Mason, Research Director, DRI. “People shouldn’t deliberately approach dolphins closer than 100m in boats, 300m on jetskis and 30m for paddlers or swimmers, and should keep their speed below 5 knots.”

Thanks to all the people who sent DRI their sightings of these recent visitors; we value your reports, and interest. Sightings are added to our database. It’s easy to do – click here on our website.
