Leadership

Program

Developing students into marine
champions for Victoria since 2001.

Our award-winning program for primary schools has developed over 10,000 ambassadors from 97 schools across Greater Melbourne into environmental stewards for 25 years.

Our award-winning i sea i care program was developed by the Dolphin Research Institute to showcase to Victorians that “what lives around our coast is too precious to lose”. Our surveys highlight Victorians misconceptions about the significance of our unique marine ecosystems and species, when more than 90% of Victorians value the marine ecosystems in other states above their own. This is a critical block to success for everyone who works on coastal and catchment issues.

i sea i care takes a long-term strategic approach. This provides added value to current marine education programs with on-going communications that are relevant and accessible to a much wider audience. i sea i care has a proven track record of developing young leaders by providing real and relevant experiences that enrich the Ambassadors and their school community.

"The best thing about being an ambassador is that we get to teach kids how they can help change our environment for the better".

"One of the biggest things I took away from the program was how to be a leader. I used to be pretty shy about speaking up, but after being given the chance to represent my school and community, I realised my voice mattered. I started talking to my local scout group about plastic waste and even helped run a stall at a community Sustainability Festival. This event was attended by close to 3000 people to raise awareness about marine pollution, getting out in nature, climate change and how our actions are very important to the health of our planet".

“I was an i sea i care ambassador in 2006, and that early experience played a pivotal role in shaping both my environmental awareness and my drive to develop cross-disciplinary approaches to wildlife protection. That path eventually led me to my current role as an acoustic consultant, where I work at the intersection of engineering and ecological monitoring".

“The ‘i sea, i care’ program is super engaging, relevant, thought-provoking and focused on developing students' understanding. It has transformed our students!”

"Both of my girls Tess and Lily were fortunate to be ISIC Ambassadors at primary school and loved the experience. My eldest daughter Tess was part of the group in 2018 and holds it as one of her fondest school experiences. Thanks to you all at Dolphin Research, Tess is looking forward to the next chapter in her life and has been accepted into Marine Science at James Cook, Townsville. As a parent I also say thank you for your time and dedication and giving the children these experiences to help open their eyes to the possibilities out there".

"My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed every moment of being an ambassador, and it’s been incredible to watch her grow through this experience. Not only does she love her time with i sea, i care, but what she’s learning is clearly making a lasting impact - on her and on us. The way she speaks about Port Phillip Bay, shares facts, and passionately advocates for animal protection fills us with pride. Thank you for all the work you do and for giving our children the opportunity to be part of something so meaningful".

"I currently am a student at Deakin University undertaking a Bachelor of Arts and Science majoring in Literature and Environmental Science. I have been following my passion of marine and environmental science since primary school after I was introduced to the Dolphin Research Institute as an 'ISIC' ambassador. Now, as I’m pacing myself through my degree, the ‘ISIC’ program has fuelled my passion over the years and still continues to do so. I’ll be volunteering with the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre in February 2026 working with sick and injured turtles. I’m hoping to continue volunteering alongside my degree for the future."
