Meet Nellie!

We recently invited our community to name one of our common dolphins, photographed leaping in front of Mornington’s iconic Schnapper Point. We received so many thoughtful and a few delightfully quirky suggestions. Thank you to everyone who sent in your name ideas!
After much consideration, our judges chose ‘Nellie’, with this heartwarming submission:
“I was visiting my youngest granddaughter, who lives in Rosebud. I live in Central Victoria, and the Mornington Peninsula is home to six of my family.
She was wearing a jumper with a dolphin on the front as we walked around the streets of Mornington. I passed a lady handing out the ‘name the dolphin’ flyers, and my gorgeous little Nellie carried that flyer for the rest of the day.
Her favourite cuddly toy is Ollie the octopus, and she has a strong connection to the sea, as her dad buys and catches food from the area.”

After sharing the news, we then found out her niece is a marine biologist working with whales around Australia and completed her university internship with DRI 7 years ago.

Our community is what makes us at DRI and we are proud to be part of such a strong one.

We are also delighted to report that Nellie was spotted during a recent Port Phillip survey in July! We can’t wait to uncover more of Nellie’s story as sightings continue, all made possible with the help of our marvellous community.
