The Two Bays Whale Project is the Institute’s exemplary Citizen Science program. Started in 2015 with a focus on Port Phillip, Western Port and surrounding waters, the program now has loyal citizen scientists across Victoria.
Our citizen scientists are heroes. Their data enabled us to write the important paper in 2025, “More Than a Migratory Corridor: Humpback Whale Feeding and Calving in Bass Strait”. This paper changes our understanding of the ecological importance of Bass Strait to humpback whales – new and crucial knowledge to inform government decisions about offshore windfarms.
The Institute is a proud member of the Australian Citizen Science Association and complies with its 10 Principles of Citizen Science and Values.
The Two Bays Whale Project receives no government funding.
