MENTONE PRIMARY WINS 2025 I SEA, I CARE SCHOOL OF THE YEAR

Our i sea, i care ambassadors attend four in person workshops throughout the year.  They will gain the skills to present to their peers in their first workshop, learn about litter and its pathways during the catchment workshop, give back by planting and weeding in term three and celebrate their hardwork with a boat trip snorkelling with Victorias marine life at the end of the year.

But outside of these workshops, some ambassadors go above and beyond in their role helping to create lasting impacts in their school and community.

In 2025, four students from Mentone Primary demonstrated outstanding passion and leadership as i sea, i care ambassadors.

Freya, Amelie, Reva and Aimee began their year by hosting a Clean Up Australia day event for their whole school – helping to raise awareness and reduce the amount of litter in their school.

After their peer teaching workshop in term one, Amie, Freya, Reva and Amelie, went on to educate the junior grades at their school as well as visit local kindergartens to teach them about our incredible marine life and how to look after it. They ran activies getting the kinder kids to act lazy like a fur seal, drill like a meat eating sea snail and swim like a smooth stingray.

The ambassadors also taught them how our rubbish can go from our homes and schools to the sea through wind, waterways and DRAINS!

These spectacular ambassadors continued leading Mentone Primary by organising a World Oceans Day fundraising event for their whole school!

Students dressed in ocean colours and outfits with a donation that allowed their school to adopt a dolphin with the money raised! Mentone Primary have adopted Ginger, a bottlenose dolphin in Western Port.

Continuing to show leadership and make a real difference, they ran beach clean ups and nurdle hunts offering students opportunities to get involved. Ambassadors along with their i sea, i care coordinator, Esther didn’t let the poor weather stop them from actively removing rubbish from our environment and teaching others where our litter can end up.

All of this amazing effort has made us extremely proud to present Mentone Primary with the i sea, i care School of the Year Award for 2025!

A huge thank you to ambassadors Amie, Amelie, Reya and Freya as well as their outstanding coordinator, Esther for all of their support, passion and dedication to protecting our marine environment.
