From seasoned spotters to wide-eyed first-time whale watchers, the excitment of seeing a whale never fades — and it’s this sense of wonder and passion that powers the Two Bays Whale Project.

Hosted by the Dolphin Research Institute, the Two Bays Whale Project is a citizen science initiative dedicated to accurately recording sightings of whales in Victorian waters. Now in its 10th year, the Project has played a pivotal role in shaping are understanding of large whales in and around Victorian waters.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our small research team (just two people equating to one full-time position), and the incredible contributions of citizen scientists and volunteers, the Two Bays Whale Project has helped us learn more than ever before about large whales in and around Victorian waters.

The Project has recently produced one of the most comprehensive reports on humpback whales in Bass Strait, and created and maintains Victoria’s first and only Humpback Whale Fluke Identification Catalogue.

These findings, including feeding behaviour and the presence of calves, changes our understanding of Bass Strait’s ecological importance far beyond its role as a migratory highway.

We receive no government funding for this work. All of our research, including this project, the Port Phillip Common Dolphin Project, and Killer Whales Australia, relies on donations from our amazing community.

We need your help to keep this vital research going.

Your donation today will help us continue to learn more about these incredible whales, monitor long-term changes, and ensure that our marine wildlife is protected in the future.

Together, we can protect what we love.

Our promise to you is that we will always strive to achieve a lasting impact on behalf of our donors and the communities we serve.
