Port Phillips remarkable common dolphin community shares their home with over 5 MILLION people.

Everywhere else in the world, common dolphins live in the open ocean. But here in Port Phillip, this unique community has made their home in our shallow embayment.

Since 2005, the Dolphin Research Institute has led the Port Phillip Common Dolphin Project, the only long-term research initiative dedicated to understanding and protecting this one-of-a-kind community.

But they’re not just dolphins living in the Port Phillip. As top predators, their health reflects the health of the whole ecosystem. And living alongside millions of people comes with risks. We’ve seen injuries and skin conditions that remind us of the urgent need for ongoing research and protection.

We receive no government funding for this work. All of our research, including this project, the Two Bays Whale Project, and Killer Whales Australia, relies on donations from our amazing community.

We need your help to keep this vital research going.

Your donation today will help us continue to learn more about these incredible dolpins, monitor long-term changes, and ensure that our marine wildlife is protected in the future.

Donate below to be part of the story.
Together, we can protect what we love.

Our promise to you is that we will always strive to achieve a lasting impact on behalf of our donors and the communities we serve.
