“Violet” was named in honour of a very special supporter. Violet was first seen in Port Phillip in 2015. In early 2020, she became a first-time mum, raising her young calf in the Bay's protected waters.

“Poke” is one of Port Phillip’s first remarkable common dolphins (Delphinus dephis), having first been seen in 2005. She is a champion mother, having her first known calf in 2005.

“V-Nick” is one of Port Phillip’s first common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), having first been seen in 2005. In fact she is dolphin #1 in our catalogue of over 150 common dolphins.

“Tall Fin” is one of the first common dolphins and long-term resident male, we saw in Port Phillip in 2006. He is #4 in our catalogue and has been seen on surveys every year since 2006.

“DD” is one of the few males in Port Phillip’s common dolphin community. He was born in 2012 to a mother we call Square Notch. In 2013, DD suffered an injury to his dorsal fin.

Whale VIC_0125 was first photographed in July 2020 off Pyramid Rock, Phillip Island. It was feeding on vast schools of baitfish and accompanied by common dolphins. It stayed feeding in the area for another week, giving the first conclusive evidence of a whale feeding in central Bass Strait for an extended period. Hence the name “Feeder Whale”.

Whale VIC_0009 was first photographed in the Two Bays region near Mount Martha in Port Phillip in August 2011. She was accompanied by what seemed to be four male humpback whales violently competing for her attention. After uploading images to the online platform Happywhale, we were excited to learn that VIC_0009 was first sighted in Hervey Bay, Queensland, in 2008.

Whale VIC_0138 was photographed in October 2020 near Rodondo Island off Wilsons Promontory with another humpback whale, giving whale watchers a spectacular display of tail slapping, head lunging, and general playfulness, with these animals pausing to seemingly enjoy their last moments off the Australian mainland before heading into the cold Southern Ocean.

Split Fin

Split Fin is perhaps Australia’s best-known killer whale. She has been known to researchers since 2003 when she was first photographed near the old whaling town of Eden in New South Wales. She and her pod have been sighted almost every year since 2003. It is believed that Split Fin is the matriarch of a family of killer whales that roams the east Australian coast between Jervis Bay in the north to the Derwent River in Tasmania – they’ve even been sighted in South Australia! As well as being the best-known killer whale, she is also the most recognisable due to the damage to her dorsal fin which was almost certainly caused through contact with a boat propeller. The fact that she survived this injury is remarkable in itself but to survive and thrive as leader of her family group is truly something special. We look forward to learning more about Split Fin and her family as time goes on and are glad you are helping us uncover the secrets of Australia’s greatest and most mysterious large predator.
