Since 1994, the Dolphin Research Institute has been working with the State Government and industry representatives to effectively regulate the dolphin-based tourism industry in Victoria.
This working relationship has resulted in the development of a State Government legislative system for tour operators. Under this system, commercial tour operators require a permit to operate. There are also a number of conditions associated with the permit that regulate the manner in which tours are run.
Since the development of this legislative system, the Dolphin Research Institute has developed cooperative research arrangements with many of the tour operators. As part of this arrangement, the individual operators provided space on their vessels for our researchers. This relationship allows us to conduct observations on impacts of the tours and also to monitor compliance to the leglislation.
