Dolphin Research Institute

The Dolphin Research Institute was seeded in the late 80's by people who were concerned about our local dolphins and what we were doing to our marine environment. We have grown in to a well-managed and sustainable not-for-profit conservation organisation. The Institute is self-funded from the community, the corporate sector and government grants. Today, we are able to employ biologists and educators to work with our volunteers and students on structured and outcome-driven projects at our Marine Conservation Centre (see map). Our original concerns and passions remain, as do our community roots.

The Institute received an Award in the Species Protection category at the 2002 Victorian Coastal Awards of Excellence. DRI is also a proud winner of the 1997 Banksia Environment Foundation national award in the "Marine & Coastal Water" category (and was a finalist in the "Community Groups" category), in recognition of its achievements and contributions to the environment. In 2002, DRI was again a Banksia Awards finalist.

We must act to stop the tragedies that are being inflicted on dolphins around the country and ensure that our dolphins in Victoria are protected from similar fates, ensuring that future generations can also be touched by these smiling ambassadors for the sea.
